Nice quiet location a bit removed from the city. Beautiful views. The house was clean and comfortable. We finally found a place with a good balance for a large group to gather, eat, and sleep under the same roof! It has a large enough gathering area with lots of seating, and kitchen and dining area with enough seats to eat meals together too! Great for our family reunion of over 40 people. The extra tables and chairs were well used and greatly appreciated. Lots of bedrooms, and enough beds for everyone. The theater room had more seating than we usually see too! Good quality furnishings and fixtures throughout. It has been kept in good repair. Indoor games and entertainment for kids of all ages was great. Outdoor space was pleasant and had a nice variety of activities. We were excited that the Hot tub was clean and functional. We were pleased that the owners provided enough supplies for our needs, like garbage sacks and dish soap. Owners were very pleasant and accommodating. We had a great experience all around staying at this property! THANK YOU!
This was the 2nd time for our 8 families all joining up here. Paul and Missy have made several great upgrades since our last stay in 2021. The gathering areas and kitchen are great for large groups. The bedrooms are comfortable, spacious, and have fun themes. The game and theater rooms are awesome, and the yard and playhouse are well kept and great for lots of activities. The surroundings are peaceful. You’re out in the country but Smithfield retail center is only 10 minutes away. We’ll be back!
This is our third time staying at this property and we have loved it every time. The house is well equipped, private and perfect for large families. There is plenty of space to spread out so you don't feel like you are on top of each other but the main spaces are large enough that everyone can get together. Great Location!
This is our 5th time staying at this beautiful home. It feels like coming home. Each time we stay we can see upgrades and updates to the space. The owners are great and we feel taken care of. We can't wait to come back and create more memories!
We just got married at this property last weekend (9/25) and absolutely LOVED IT! When we first got there the door to the chairs/ tables were locked so we wrote the Time/ Brandi and they came over within minutes to unlock it. This place was everything we wanted and more. All of our friends/ family were able to stay with us the whole time. There was enough room for everyone to have their own space but be able to mingle and hang out. We didnt think the movie theater or game room would really be used but they were both a hit!! We had our welcome dinner there on Friday then the ceremony/ reception on Saturday. We used the big field on the side for our ceremony and then moved over to the patio with the fire pit for dinner. We rented lights to surround the perimeter of the patio and it worked out so well. There was enough parking for everyone we invited. The views are amazing and everyone was raving about it! I cannot recommend this place enough. If I could do it all over again there I would in a heartbeat!
Our stay with Bear Springs was absolutely incredible! We were far enough away from the city to enjoy the nights (and meteor shower); we had plenty of space for everyone in the family who came and stayed and didn't feel crowded. The property is large, was clean, and well kept, with plenty of amenities available. Check in and Check out were a breeze; and the property managers were wonderful to work with (we had a member of our group leave some items behind, and they assisted in getting them back into the house after our checkout had occurred).
This property is simply amazing, accommodations were very nice, clean and very well stocked kitchen. We were very impressed with the bedrooms, big kitchen and big bathrooms, accessing the property was very easy and the owners Tim and Brandi were amazing, very quick to respond to questions and outstanding in accommodating our needs. Tim and Brandi made our wedding weekend the best ever, recommend staying at this property
What a great space for a large family gathering. Beautiful views from every angle, isolated but close enough to run into town, and really, really comfortable. Fun decor and atmosphere, and Tim and Brandi responded quickly with anything that we needed. We hope to return soon with even more family. Can’t recommend it highly enough.
We have stayed at many VRBO properties and have usually had very good experiences. The property manager and the owners were exceptional to work with for this property. We had some issues with our family related to the Covid Pandemic and had to make changes to our initial reservations. These folks were amazingly accommodating and made sure all our needs were attended to. We had a wonderful experience and we highly recommend. this property.
I can’t recommend this place enough. We had an incredible time. Every detail was taken care of, communication with the owners was fantastic, the place is beautiful! It snowed one day and as we were eating lunch a whole crew showed up and shoveled the deck and walk ways so it would be ready for us. Thanks for a wonderful weekend!
Our extended family of 18 stayed at this house for a week over Christmas. Despite it being 2020, we had the best Christmas ever! The house is modern, well kept and very spacious. All the rooms are large so we never felt cramped. The location is perfect because you are out of town far enough to get amazing mountain views, but close enough to town to get everything you need. The property manager is the best. He was so easy to communicate with and went above and beyond to help make our stay the best. We will definitely return.
All family was comfortably accommodated in this expansive home. We had several smaller children and teens that loved the bunk rooms. So many options for family fun with Volleyball, basketball court, amazing playground and huge firepit. Only regret is that we didn't book for more days.
Our extended family of 20+ people used this property for a week. It was amazing! There was easily room for 40 of us. The house is out in the country, so there is a bit of seclusion. This really helped one night when we watched the meteor showers. There is a great play set that our grand children enjoyed playing on. The movie room was awesome for the videophiles. The place was well kept, plenty of supplies. We used the chairs at several campfires. The bedrooms were huge - the main floor bedrooms were nice for the older members of the family. The house was stocked with plenty of toys, towels, books, videos - everything needed for a great reunion. The house was very clean and well kept. Within an hour of Bear Lake (we went jet skiing) and 15 minutes from down town Logan. The adults also enjoyed the hot tub. Everything you could ask for in a vacation home.
A great property. Very spacious and welcoming. We didn’t have little children due to #’s state restrictions and personal pandemic concerns but this beautiful property has something for everyone. Kids would have loved Bruce the Bear and everything else. Beds were great too!!
We enjoyed a terrific stay here for 4 days with 32 people. The facilities were great with large rooms for gathering. The kitchen was well stocked and there were games and videos for children of all ages. Many of our grandchildren told is this was the best reunion we have ever had.
We had a small family reunion with about 20 people. The house was great! Lots of things for the kids to do (games, activities, badminton net, playhouse, swing set, large hot tub, movie theater room, etc.) and enough space for everyone to spread out (the house is large enough to host even larger groups than ours). All of the beds were very comfortable, and the house was well-stocked with the essentials. We would definitely stay here again. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable time....the kids did not want to leave. We highly recommend to other groups/families!
Beautiful property and home. The property manager was very accommodating and timely in communication. The home is incredible and perfect for a family get away or a major family reunion or retreat. We will definitely book again!
The best part about the property is that it has so many games and activities available. We had a great time without leaving the rental very much
There was something for every age group, from books, puzzles and games to ping pong, air hockey and movie theater. The morning we left, it snowed and the owner even came over shoveled the walks and cleaned off our cars! Great hosts and beautiful home!
Great property, friendly owner. Really enjoyed our stay.

Additional Bear Spings Info
If you’re still browsing the Bear Springs Retreat website at this point you must be really bored or just have a lot of time on your hand. The following tabs contain some additional information that you can tell all your family and friends about and impress them with how much you know about Bear Springs Retreat. Just don’t be too weird about it. Remember that every family has that one crazy aunt or uncle and if you’re not sure who it is, then it’s probably you!
When choosing a name for the house and surrounding property, the owners Paul and Lisa wanted to go with a bear theme. The Bear River is located less than 1 mile to the west of the property and black bears can be found in the mountains of northern Utah. So for several years they called it Bear Hollow. The term “hollow” (pronounced “holler” if you’re from the south) means a small sheltered valley and is a common term in the back woods of Virginia where Lisa grew up. When they were ready to file the legal paperwork for the vacation rental business, they discovered there was another nearby vacation rental property already using that same name. Sticking with the same bear theme, Bear Springs Retreat was chosen since there is a spring fed stream that runs through the property. There are still a few “Bear Hollow” signs around the house and property.
Bruce the Bear, perched above the living room, is a black bear from Virginia. He was shot and mounted by Lisa’s brother Ray. For many years the bear was a part of Ray’s log cabin home in Virginia until he graciously donated the bear to be a part of Bear Springs. For several years there was debate on what to name the bear but there was never an agreement until Paul and Lisa discovered the “Mother Bruce” children’s book series. So the bear was named Bruce after the character in the book. You will find several of the Mother Bruce books at Bear Springs Retreat for our guests to read.
Paul and Lisa purchased the 30-acre property in 2010, while still on active duty in the Navy and living in Virginia. For the next 4 years Paul planned and designed the house that would comfortably fit large groups of people and reflect the agricultural setting of the surrounding Cache Valley farmlands. Although Paul and Lisa were empty nesters they wanted to have a home for large family gatherings. When Paul retired from the Navy in 2014, he and Lisa moved to Cache Valley and lived in Logan for a year while the house was being built. When the house was finished they lived in it until 2019 when they built the house just to the north so they could begin renting out Bear Springs on a full time basis. Both the Bear Springs Retreat house and their house next door was built by Paul and Lisa’s good friend and neighbor down the street Marcus Reid. One of Paul’s hobbies is wood working and building things so he did a little bit of the construction himself. He built the barn and playhouse to the east of the house, the 3 cupolas on top of the house, the theater room, the bunks in the bunkrooms, the bed in the Kodiak room, the day bed in the Polar Bear room and the bed in the Papa Bear room.
Bear Springs Retreat is part of a 30 acre parcel of land that is subdivided into 2 smaller parcels that Bear Springs and the house to the north are built on. The third larger parcel is fenced off as pasture land for cattle grazing. Paul and Lisa’s neighbor keeps 30-40 head of cows on the land for most of the year. If you’re here around late winter to early spring you might get to see some of the cows giving birth. It’s always fun to watch the new born calves running and frolicking within just a few weeks of being born. There is a small creek that runs through the property that starts out from a spring a couple of miles to the northeast and then dumps into the Bear River about a mile to the west. There are plenty of frogs to catch around the creek. In the springtime a chorus of thousands of frogs will serenade you every evening around sunset. Other wildlife you might see around the property include mink, rock chucks (marmots), foxes, skunks, and raccoons. Occasionlly you might hear a coyote in the distance, but they’ve never been spotted on the property. Birds that are commonly seen or heard around the property include eagles, hawks, pheasant, cranes, owls and ducks. Paul and Lisa raise ducks so you’ll probably see a few of them waddling around the property. There is a bald eagle nest in the large tree that overhangs the road about 2 miles to the south of Bear Springs on 1200 West so keep your eyes out for bald eagles. If you’re sitting out on the deck after sunset when it is almost completely dark it is common to hear an owl perched on top of the house or barn hooting back and forth to other owls nearby.
Here’s some local bear folklore…
“Old Ephraim” was a legendary, giant, marauding grizzly bear who roamed the Wasatch Mountains in the early 20th century. Originally known as “Old Three Toes,” because of a deformity in one foot, it was a tale by P.T. Barnum that affixed the more fanciful name of Old Ephraim to the animal.
The bear was believed to have killed as many as 15 sheep in one night and was indeed possibly the largest and most elusive bear ever in the Beehive State.
William Clark, a sheepherder, killed Old Ephraim in August 1923. Clark set many traps for the bear over the years, but the animal evaded them. He was finally caught in a trap in the earliest of hours that fateful August morning. However, the bear, reputed to stand 9-feet-11 inches tall and weigh some 1,100 pounds, clawed down the 8-inch diameter tree the trap was tied to and ran up a hill with the trap still on his foot. Clark fired all his bullets into the bear before it dropped.
Years later, Clark reflected on Old Ephraim’s demise to a Deseret News reporter and stated: “I sat down and watched his spirit depart from that great body and it seemed to take a long time, but at last, he raised his head a mite, gasped, and was still. “Was I happy? No, and if I had to do it over, I wouldn’t kill him. … I could see the suffering in his eyes as he tried to climb that bank.” Clark claimed to have killed 43 bears in his 34 years of sheepherding, but Old Ephraim was his last by choice.
Various historical accounts of Old Ephraim credit his range as from Weber County to Soda Springs, Idaho. That’s because a Nov. 9, 1911 story in the Salt Lake Telegram newspaper reported that a bear hunting party was looking for Old Eph in Morgan County too. Led by former Utah Gov. John C. Cutler, this group spent several days in the wild and only found the bear’s huge tracks. Eventually the bear was believed to have settled exclusively in Logan Canyon
Old Ephraim’s legend is summarized concisely by Nephi J. Bott’s poem, inscribed in a plaque at the bottom of the stone monument, erected in 1966 by Logan Boy Scouts, where the bear was buried:
“Old Ephraim, Old Ephraim, your deeds were so wrong yet we build you this marker and sing you this song. To the king of the forest so mighty and tall, we salute you, Old Ephraim the king of them all.”
The bruin still lives on in campfire tales and various tributes. For example, in Bear Lake Valley, there’s the Old Ephraim Pizza, 32 inches in diameter. In a remote side canyon of Logan Canyon, there’s a large stone monument where he was killed. The movie “Walking Thunder” (1997) staring actor/singer John Denver’s, was inspired by the tale of Old Ephraim.
